I have been taught that all emotional and psychological trauma, whether self-imposed or other imposed, is trapped inside every one of the cells that make up our entire body. This leads to diseased cells.
One of the quickest ways to begin the process of purging and healing is movement, something as simple as a brisk walk outdoors or a moderate weight lifting routine. It doesn’t take much. When our bodies begin to sweat we not only release physical toxins, we also release emotional and spiritual toxins.
Movement changes our breathing pattern. We take in more oxygen and reach for deeper breaths to satisfy the appropriate need for the activity. I have personally experienced immediate relief from anxiety and fear just by simply breathing. I have even pulled myself out of a panic attack by using breath-work.
I tend to hold my breath when an unwanted thought or outside influence attempts to disturb my peace of mind. Perhaps you can relate to this? Taking a purposeful deep breath all the way down into my abdomen, then holding it for a count of three and releasing slowly with a gentle ‘sigh’. This practice always regulates my central nervous system which calms the whole body, bringing everything back into harmony.
Disciplining our body first in this manner, unlocks the capacity to discipline our mind. This discipline flows into our prayer life as well. We become much more attuned to hearing from God as we maintain a calm and regulated nervous system with a peaceful mindset.
